Types of skiing
Downhill: The traditional form of skiing that most of us are familiar, going downhill on the slopes is enjoyed by millions of people every year during the winter months. There are plenty of places across the US for example ranging from the upper Appalachian to the Rockies and in many states as well. Each mountain usually has many different trails that vary in difficulty that you can enjoy.
Cross Country: This form of skiing lets you travel the trails during winter and provides an excellent means of working out. Furthermore, you don’t need a mountain for this form of skiing as any public trail that allows cross country activities in the winter months will do. This means that you can hit the trails around your home without having to travel far to enjoy excellent cross country skiing opportunities as all you need is snow.
The basic equipment for skiing is the same for both downhill and cross country, although there are differences in the size of the skies used. Basically, you will need the following items for skiing;
- Ski Boots
- Ski pants
- Jacket or coat
- Ski cap or stocking
- Long underwear
Because you are moving through the cold, you will need the best combination of winter protection while remaining flexible so you can react to the changing conditions. It is best to dress in layers starting with your long underwear following by shirts and ski pants and then topping it off with a ski cap for protecting the head and especially the ears. You will need goggles, especially those tinting for maximum protection from sunlight and the reflection of the sun off of the snow.
Cross country skis are narrower than downhill skis, allowing for less weight and easier maneuvering while cutting across trails.
